ActivInspire- Effective Questioning with ActivExpressions and ActiVotes

Participants will explore using the Question Wizard and Express Poll in ActivInspire to utilize questioning strategies that promote higher-level thinking and create a lesson activity that uses effective questioning as an instructional strategy.  

Prerequisite Skills: Participants must have a basic understanding of ActivInspire software and have some experience using it in instruction.

Annotating Text to Facilitate Close Reading

Participants will explore how students can use virtual notes, highlighting, and other annotation features within PDF documents in order to support students as they read closely and critically. Text annotation features are available in a variety of eReaders including Adobe Acrobat Reader on PCs. Participants are expected to prepare for the session by watching a tutorial video in advance of the session and then come prepared with a sample electronic text to be integrated into a lesson.  During the session, participants will create a student examplar by annotating this sample electronic text. 

Prerequisite Skills: Ability to learn new skills and ideas through video and text.

Web 2.0 Tools to Enhanced Elementary Science Instruction

Web 2.0 tools are hosted on web sites that permit the user to not only consume (read about) information but also share (write about) their understanding. Participants will be exposed to a variety of web 2.0 tools that permit students to more deeply engage with scientific content.  Sample tools include Wordle, VoiceThread, Corkboard.me, Google Maps, Google Earth, Google Docs, and Google Forms.

Prerequisites: Participants should have familiarity with word processing, a drawing program (such as Pixie), and an audio recording program (such as Audacity). If you intend to implement this strategy using an iPad, then participation in the iPad for Teachers 101 workshop or equivalent experience is required.

Screencasting to Demonstrate Understanding

Participants will explore how students can create a screencast (narration as they draw, click, and type on the screen) in order to demonstrate their understandinf of new content. Screencasting features are available in a variety of programs including Jing and ActivInspire on PCs, and in apps such as Show Me. Participants are expected to prepare for the session by watching a tutorial video in advance of the session and then come prepared with an outline of a sample instructional activity for which this technique would be appropriate.  During the session, participants will create a student exemplar screencast and corresponding scoring tool.
