Annotating Text to Facilitate Close Reading

Workshop Description:
Participants will explore how students can use virtual notes, highlighting, and other annotation features within PDF documents in order to support students as they read closely and critically. Text annotation features are available in a variety of eReaders including Adobe Acrobat Reader on PCs or iBooks on iPads. Participants are expected to prepare for the session by watching a tutorial video in advance of the session and then come prepared with a sample electronic text to be integrated into a lesson. During the session, participants will create a student exemplar by annotating this sample electronic text.
Outcome: Participants will increase skills in the use and integration of technology in classroom instruction.
Indicator(s):
- Participants will explore how to integrate technology so students can use annotation features to more deeply comprehend text.
- Participants identify how annotation tools can be used to present information and content in different ways, differentiate the ways students can express what they know, and stimulate interest and motivation to learn.
Prerequisite Skills: Basic computing skills: file management and word processing.
